Answer  Do I need an International Drivers License (IDP) to rent a car in Bulgaria?

IKO86 recommends you supplement your local driver's license with an International Drivers Permit. An IDP is written in 10 languages and serves as an officially recognized translation of your local driver's license in over 150 participating members of the United Nations.
Your IDP should always be accompanied by your valid local driving license.
The UN do not issue driving permits, but use authorized travel associations to administer the service. A passport-size booklet is administered verifying that the motorist has a valid driver's license from his/her permanent place of residence. In reference to travelers from the US, Canada, Australia, South Africa, etc; a driver's license from these locations is acceptable by IKO86 Rent Car, however, the Bulgarian Police do not accept these licenses independently, and so it is required that your driver's license be accompanied by a valid International Drivers permit.
You are required for your driver's license to be accompanied by a valid International Drivers permit. You may apply for a IDL at one of the many AAA outlets ( The American Automobile Association ). The fee is $10.00 USD and it takes only 10 minutes for the procedure to be completed.

Answer   What is the minimum age requirement to rent a car in Bulgaria?

The renter and any associated additional drivers must be a minimum of 25 years of age for all car categories. Each driver must present a valid driver's license in her/his name that has been held for a minimum period of one year. Answer  What is your refueling policy?

A full tank of gas is supplied with every car rental upon delivery. IKO86 does not have a refueling service charge, however the gasoline consumption is payable by the renter. May we suggest all car rentals be returned with a full tank of gas in order to simplify the return process of the vehicle.

Answer  Do you offer rental vehicles for handicapped drivers?

IKO86 Rent-a-Car Bulgaria is working on accommodating handicapped drivers. We have successfully worked with the speech-impaired; however, we do not have vehicles available to facilitate individuals with kinetic disabilities. Answer  What should I do if I am involved in a car accident?

In the event of an accident, if the collision involves body injury you must report the accident to the local police (the police will visit the accident location for an examination of the statements) from where the accident occurred. The driver must complete and file any accident reports required by local or state authorities. In addition, the driver is required to complete an IKO86 accident report for insurance purposes. This report is for both parties' protection. Be aware that statements you make may be made a permanent part of the accident report. It is important to be truthful and accurate as your statements may be used in legal claims.

Answer  Can I add an additional driver?

The minimum age and drivers license requirements for the renter also apply to the additional driver. There is no additional driver fee for up to one extra driver. For every additional driver a 2.90 Euro (€) daily fee applies. All additional drivers will be covered under the insurance coverage.

You can change, review or cancel your reservation via e-mail. To change any aspect of your car reservation after receiving a confirmation e-mail, please contact IKO86 at rent-a-car@iko86.com . Please remember that changing the dates, locations and type and class of vehicle may change the rate of your reservation. There is no charge for canceled or changed reservations. If you make a cancellation please do so 48 hours prior to scheduled rental pick-up time. We appreciate your professional courtesy.

Answer  How do I extend my car rental?

To extend your car rental please contact IKO86 at (+35982) 82 85 23 prior to your arranged rental return date. Any changes in your car rental return date may change the rate. There is no extra fee for extending your car rent. If in the event you wish to extend the rental period please do so in time so as to help ensure that all other customers will have their reserved car available upon their arrival. If in the case the specific rental is needed, a replacement vehicle will be arranged.

Answer  What is the standard rental period and what time do I have to return the car?

A standard rental day is calculated on a 24-hour basis. Similarly, the charges for optional insurance and waivers are applied on a 24-hour basis. Returning the car after or even before the designated time might affect the rate quoted. We do give a two-hour grace period with no extra charge.

Answer  How do I receive the rental car upon arrival at the Bulgaria International Airport?

Upon landing at the International Airport in Bulgaria you will reclaim your baggage and exit to Immigrations for passport control (not required for passengers traveling from Intra-Schengen Countries). You will exit into the Arrival Hall (greeting area).
Your surname will be posted on an IKO86 Rent-a-Car Reservations sign whereby a representative of IKO86 will assist you with your car rental.

This service has a surcharge of 21 Euro that is added to your total rental amount. All after-hour surcharge funds are distributed amongst the individual employees that work overtime to make sure that you are satisfied and encounter the least amount of hassle possible during your rental experience. Our airport location operates off-terminal at a nearby location. Rent-a-car companies with couters at the airport terminal require a time consuming shuttle trip to take you to their car lot. By operating our rental counter off terminal, IKO86 has greatly reduced costs (for example: "no" 13% airport tax), and this reduction is then passed along to you. When you confirm your reservation, you will receive a rental confirmation by e-mail with instructions and further contact information. We serve International Airport with a “No” waiting policy 24- hours every day. We bring the rental to you! We do not have time consuming shuttle trips or long walks and waiting to receive your rental. We have your convenience in mind!

Answer  What is your rental vehicle hold policy?

IKO86 will hold a car reservation for 90 minutes after the reserved time specified by the client. After this time the reservation will be considered cancelled and marked as a No Show. If your delay is due to airport procedures, (lost baggage etc.) please make sure to notify IKO86 so that the reservation will be considered active.

A valid credit card in the name of the renter and any associated extra drivers must be presented at the start of the car rental period. IKO86 does not accept debit cards, checks or cash cards as credit identification. Charges that have incurred during the car rental period such as, the non-waivable excess due to damage or loss of the rented vehicle and any administrative sanctions will be charged to the credit card

Answer  If a traffic violation ticket has been issued during the car rental, am I responsible?

Tickets and attached administrative penalties resulting from any violation of the Bulgarian Traffic law during the car rental period, is solely the renter's responsibility. If any such administrative sanctions are not disclosed to IKO86 Rent-a-Car at the end of the rental period the violations will be paid via renter's credit card and a receipt will be sent by post.

Answer  What is your policy for "No Show" reservations, how are they handled?

In the case of a renter "No Show", the reservation will be cancelled. As you know, IKO86 Rent a Car does not request that individuals supply their credit card number while making a reservation online, as do most all other rental companies. IKO86 does not charge for last minute cancellations or a change in rental date. We do ask potential customers who make a booking online, value our flexible booking service and be sure to notify IKO86 of the cancellation. We appreciate your courtesy towards our company and our policy. As a result of a "No Show" and no attempt to contact IKO86, the name of the renter will be added to the official rent a car black list for all of Bulgaria, due to making false reservations. The individual will encounter a problem when attempting to reserve a rental in the future with any and all other car rental companies.

Rent a Car FAQ


ON THE ROAD - Helpful Info

To drive in Bulgaria you have to be at least 18 years old and to have a valid driving licence. Remember always carry your driver’s license with you when you drive.

Roads

Roads in Bulgaria are usualy two-way and one lane each way, when we talk about the countryside. So – drive slowly and carefully. In and around the bigger towns and cities roads are better and faster.

Speed

In cities speed limit is 50km/h, outside city limit – 90km/h. On the high way 130km/h are allowed.

Parking

Be careful where you park your car – watch for parking signs and try to park in designated parking spaces!

Traffic police

If a representative of the traffic police stops you, remain in your car and wait for the policeman to approach. You should be asked to present the vehicle’s documentation such as registration card, technical support card and third party liability policy.

Fines

For violating speed restrictions the fines are between 20 and 150 leva, which you could be asked to pay when leaving the country, at the customs.

Remember – fasten your seat belts – it saves lives and it’s the law. Otherwise you could be charged a fine of 40 leva.

Petrol stations

OMV, Shell, Petrol and LUK Oil are the biggest petrol station companies in Bulgaria.

Most gas stations require customers to pay at the cashier desk.

Self service is not very popular.

Equipment

You should always check the emergency equipment of your rental car.The following is required by law: emergency medical box, fire extinguisher, triangle road sign, spare tire with rim, jack screw and lug wrench.
